Before configuring the Plex Media Server, it’s important to make sure your media files are named and organized correctly. To do this, Plex needs to know a little information about your files:

  • Whether a file is a Movie, TV Show or Music file
  • The files are correctly named for a Movie, TV Show or Music file
  • The files are in stored the correct directory structure

Files not being named or organized properly are the top cause of files either being incorrectly matched or not matched at all.

Once you name files with correct titles, Metadata is matching up with each file's name, to show intuitively informative file lists as below

TV Shows usually consist of several show seasons with a number of episodes per season. Shows can also be date-based or absolute order.

Series/Episode based TV Shows(Series/Episode based TV Shows)
  • Create a folder named with the Show’s name
  • Create a folder inside that one with the Season number
  • Put the show files in the Season folder, named : Show Name Series Episode
    EX) Heroes S01E01.mkv
  • If you would like to include the episode name or additional information, add it after the "S01E01", date or absolute order number.
    EX) Heroes S01E01 - So It Begins.mkv

      • Heroes - S01E01.vob
      • Heroes - S01E02.vob
      • Heroes - S01E03.vob
    • Season 2

TV Shows that are date based should be named as follows

  • TV Show Name
    • TV Show Name - 01-20-2010.mkv
  • Dashes in the date are not required. Periods and spaces are acceptable.
  • You may also use a date format of 2010-01-20.
Absolute Ordered TV Shows

TV Shows like Anime should be named as follows

  • TV Shows
    • TV Show Name - 003.mkv

Absolute ordering must be supported by thetvdb.com for a show for the Plex Media Scanner to use it.
